If you’re in downtown Veracruz, this is a must-try spot for coffee and food.
We first discovered Café Impetus while staying at a condo in Veracruz over the Christmas holidays. On the day when our family members arrived, exhausted from travel plans gone sideways, my husband scoured Uber Eats for some comfort food: burritos.
There are lots of burritos in Mexico, but some are just ordinary good. These ones were exceptionally good. 10/10.
Filled with slow-cooked beef, just the right amount of savoury rice and beans, and packed with flavour in a soft but slightly toasted shell, they were just right.
I have no pictures of them because they are in my belly. :)
My husband and I are both coffee aficionados, so after ordering the burritos (twice) and finding out that Impetus was also a coffee roaster and restaurant, we went to try it out for breakfast at their Impetus Riviera location.
Menu Highlights:
Cafe Filtrado Extraordinario: Floral and delicate on the palette, a reddish-brown coffee with a very strong flavour, but no bitterness. The kind of coffee that is very hard to find, but for those who mellow out their coffee with milk or cream, you will actually enjoy this one black. And for those who always enjoy black coffee, this one tastes so smooth.
Capuccino: A classic. The milk is rich and creamy but doesn’t hide the flavour of the coffee, as some do; it compliments it. The coffee is still strong, and perfectly matched with the dense milk.
Chilaquiles Birria: When you want to order “nachos” in Mexico, they are called chilaquiles. These ones were topped with the same savoury birria meat as the burritos, doused in salsa verde and sprinkled with cotija cheese. Adorned with fresh red onion and cilantro, a delectable and hearty meal.
El Bagel de Salmon: Fresh salmon, capers, and cream cheese on a toasty bagel. Cause you’re feeling fancy.
Cuerniyuno: A buttery croissant filled with scrambled eggs, bacon, mayonnaise and avocado slices. Very satisfying to the taste buds and belly.
Frutos del Bosque: Blackberries, blueberries and strawberries with coconut yogurt, honey and granola. Simply delicious.
Cheesecake de Zanahoria: A carrot-cake cheesecake. Incredible fusion.
Espresso Extraordinario: A bold and exquisite espresso to accompany your dessert.
The Coffee To Take Home:
We asked for the roast that we had in the Cafe Extraordinario, and it was pricier than the rest, but worth the splurge IMO.
It’s described as Huehuetepan, The Natural, Coffee from the mesophyll forest of the central mountainous region of the state of Veracruz, Mexico.
You can also visit Impetus at two other locations in downtown Boca Del Rio, Reforma and Casa Tostadora de Café.
We plan on scouting them out this week and tasting more awesome food and specialty coffee.
