If you are planning on spending a day in Puebla, here are our recommendations on how to pass your time. Everything here is in walking distance or a quick and inexpensive Uber ride if you need a break.
Coffee & Breakfast: La Colecturia
La Colecturia is a beautiful and iconic cultural spot in Puebla. Centuries ago it was the place where Catholic bishops would collect tributes:
“La Colecturía was the most important economic and financial centers in Latin America. In the early 18th century, the Bishopric of Tlaxcala-Puebla allocated this property to store tithes in kind —grains and seeds— making it the most significant one in America.
During the Viceroyalty, the Bishopric of Tlaxcala-Puebla was highly powerful —socially and economically— exerting influence over seven states in the Mexican Republic: from Oaxaca to Veracruz.” - lacolecturia.com
Boasting a living orchard, a restaurant and a café, it is a very unique and posh place to enjoy some delicious beverages and food in contemporary Puebla. My favourite breakfast dish is a Croque Madame at Comedor Cultural, the café.
Second Coffee: Atta Salon Café
For the coffee aficionado, talk a stroll to Atta Café, located in Los Tres Patios, to sip various kinds of speciality coffees made with a selection of different methods. My personal favourite is the Gibraltar— a bold and delicious milk coffee with the perfect ratio, while my husband prefers a Chemex made brew— black. The vibe of the café is earthy, calm, and mellow.
Pizza & Pasta: Brico Pizzeria
When you’re ready for lunch, you can hop over to Brico Pizzeria— also in Los Tres Patios—, our favourite spot for artisanal wood-oven pizzas in Puebla. The quattro formaggi pasta is also delicious, and made with lots of love. The food here is consistently delicious, and the staff is very welcoming, chill and friendly.
Walk it Off: Zócalo de Puebla
By now, you’re probably going to want to move. You’re about a nine minute walk from the Zócalo de Puebla, the central square in the historic heart of Puebla. It’s a vibrant plaza surrounded by important landmarks like the Puebla Cathedral and the Municipal Palace. The town square is filled with trees, lush gardens, fountains, and plenty of benches, offering a lively atmosphere with lots of people, street performers, musicians, and vendors.
Here you can veer off onto any side street and do some perusing and shopping, visit an ornate cathedral like Capilla del Rosario, and enjoy the vibe as you explore. One of the coolest streets to roam is Alley of the Frogs— a colourful and bustling street filled with music, people, shops, cafés, restaurants, and more. You can also stop and eat some tasty antijotos, or street food, if you still have an appetite. ;)
Dinner with a View: Comal
When you eventually get hungry again, you can enjoy a very tasty and economic dinner with a view, overlooking the historic cathedral. Comal offers delicious traditional Poblano cuisine at a very good price. Pro tip: if you don’t understand the menu, take a snapshot and upload into Chat GPT for a detailed translation.
Desert: Profética
If you love cheesecake, go here. It is by far my favourite cheesecake in Puebla— and this city has a lot of great cheesecakes (and deserts in general). Profética is a bohemian eatery nestled in the middle of a very large public library and bookstore in a historic stone building. It is a great place to slow down and relax at the end of a day of exploration.
In summary…
